Tempest

TransAlta Corporation (TransAlta) through its wholly owned subsidiary TransAlta Coaldale Wind L.P. by its General Partner TransAlta Coaldale Wind Inc. plans to build, own and operate the Tempest Wind Power Project (the Project or Tempest). A transmission line to connect the Project to the grid will be applied for under a separate application. This webpage will be updated with new information as it becomes available.

Tempest Wind Power Project

TransAlta started developing Tempest in 2006. This included collecting wind data, talking with landowners, collecting environmental data, and conducting required analysis per Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) Rule 007. The Project was submitted to the AUC on December 20, 2022 (Proceeding 27726) and received the Approval (27767-D02-2023) and Permit and Licence (27767-D03-2023) on April 28, 2023.

The Project, as applied, is a 99-megawatt (MW) wind project located approximately 15 km east of Stirling, Alberta, in Warner County. The Project will consist of 22 Vestas, V150 4.5 MW wind turbines. The current target commercial operation date for the Project is Q4 2026.

TransAlta applied for a Development Permit (Development Permit No. 23-29) from the County of Warner No. 5 on June 6, 2023, and received approval on July 19, 2023, with the permit becoming effective on August 9, 2023.

Tempest Wind Power Connection Project

As part of our ongoing development efforts, the construction of a transmission line to connect the Project to the electrical grid will also be required.

The Tempest Wind Power Connection Project will consist of approximately 20 km of new 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission connecting the approved Tempest wind farm substation in SE 19-7-17 W4M and connected to an existing 138 kV line approximately 1 km north of the Chin Reservoir.

Preliminary route options have been developed to collect feedback from landowners within 800 m of the proposed routes. Additional consultation is ongoing, with a tentative date of June 2024 for applying to the AUC. AUC approval is anticipated to be received in Fall 2025.
